Australia’s most terrible crimes of their time surfaced on 3 March 1892, when police investigated a smell at an empty house in the Melbourne suburb of Windsor. Embedded in cement beneath a hearthstone of the fireplace, they found the decomposing body of a woman aged about 30. She had been murdered and had been dead for about 3 months.
