Firefighters are battling 66 fires currently burning across Queensland.

Severe fire dangers are forecast for the Darling Downs and Granite Belt, Central Highlands and Coalfields, and the Warrego and Maranoa districts today due to hot, dry and windy conditions.

Residents around Peregian Springs were forced to evacuate on Wednesday, but the fire is now under control.

All active blazes at currently burning at advice alert level or below.

Acting Chief Superintendent Kevin Reading tells Natalie Peters and Erin Molan conditions are unfortunately expected to worsen on the weekend.

“We’re expecting some conditions Friday and again on Sunday to move into severe.

“If we can provide some relief for New South Wales, that would be nice. We’ll take what we can.”
