US sets its sights on historic midterm elections

Michael McLaren

Come Tuesday, what’s being touted as the most significant midterm election in US history is set to unfold.

Historically, midterms have come to constitute a referendum on how a president is tracking, with protest votes often registered in a rejection of those in power.

But it seems the subversive status quo here could be set to change, with the predicted tidal wave of anti-Trump support looking unlikely to materialise.

“What’s happening here right now is becoming very interesting,” says James Morrow, Opinion Editor at The Daily Telegraph.

“Donald Trump has become such a reviled character among the left, the progressives and the so-called mainstream media. They loathe Trump, they’ve tried to set this up as sending Trump a message.”

“But it doesn’t look like there’s going to be a big swing against Trump or the Republicans. This means the whole establishment, the political media class, which hates Trump, could well be cruising for a huge defeat around their claims about how awful Trump is and how much everybody hates Trump.”
