Lockdown feels: CBD businesses battle quiet days amid Omicron peak

Scott Emerson

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner says Brisbane’s CBD is battling what feels like a lockdown for businesses.

He said the CBD was very quiet, with businesses suffering across the suburbs.

“It’s interesting because when you look at the figures for foot traffic in the Queen Street Mall as an indication … we are less than 50 per cent of normal levels, it’s got less than half the people it normally would prior to COVID,” he told Scott Emerson.

“That is a significant drop.”

He said it was a “lockdown outcome” without an official lockdown.

The council has introduced a fee relief for businesses impacted.

Annual fees and charges will be waived or refunded if retailers and clubs have already paid for the quarter.
