4BC FOLLOWING THE FLOODS | Peter Psaltis: East Brisbane, Rocklea and Oxley
Peter Psaltis has returned to Brisbane streets this morning as the clean-up after the floods continues.
He visited East Brisbane, where he told Neil Breen residents have begun clearing out their homes.
“Many people last night had started to put out their rubbish and-
“Well, we call it rubbish now but it’s their possessions and that’s the saddest part,” he said.
“These are people’s lives, their memories, et cetera, their prized possessions that well, you can’t use anymore.”

Peter visited Blunder Road at Oxley, where motorists are getting caught out by floodwaters.
“There is so much water in that area, it just is not going anywhere, Breenie,” he said.
“As I’m speaking to you now, there’s trucks doing U-turns, cars realising that they can’t get past because there’s no real signage down here.”
Neil noted the city is “dysfunctional” today with no public transport and most schools returning.

In Rocklea, Peter spoke with Eric, who runs the Rocklea International Motel and Conference Centre.
Eric: “We lost power at 3am on Saturday morning and still don’t have power.”
Neil Breen: “Saturday morning!?”
Eric: “I can’t sell any rooms anymore, I don’t have power.”
Peter Psaltis: “And you did have people staying with you but the last of them had to leave yesterday, they had to go somewhere where they had power…”

The Rocklea Hotel is re-opening today after closing for a few days.
“It is quite amazing, Psalty,” the owner, Sam, said. “It is a weird feeling at the moment, has been for several days.
“We’ve been like a bit of an island, cut off from everyone else.
“We survived the flooding but a lot of our great customers and people we know from the surrounding businesses have been devastated by it.”
