Peris, still just a celebrity pick

Date

Senior Labor MP Chris Evans has defended Prime Minister Julia Gillards decision to personally elevate Olympian Nova Peris to the number one spot on the Labor Northern Territory Senate ticket.

Ms Gillard wants Ms Peris to become the first indigenous woman in the federal parliament, saying she's been troubled about federal Labor's lack of indigenous representation.

This week she used her "captain's pick" to ask the ALP executive to put the former hockey star first on the Senate ticket, ahead of sitting Labor NT Senator Trish Crossin

Her decision sparked criticism that the move circumvented usual party procedures to allow a rank-and-file ballot to decide the matter.

But Senator EVANS has told ABC Radio that Ms Gillard was right to step in because the Labor Party has failed to successfully get an indigenous person elected for federal parliament.

BC Mornings:  Julia Gillard has faced criticism over her decision to pick Nova Peris as a Northern Territory Senate candidate in the next federal election.

Aboriginal community worker Sam Watson tells Greg Cary while he respects Nova, he believes someone more experienced needs to run for senate.
