New cigarette price hike

Date

4BC Big Backyard: The latest price increase of 12.5 percent on tobacco products comes into effect today.

The average packet of cigarettes will cost approximately two dollars more, and the average smoker will pay an extra $10 per week on tobacco products.

Dr Colin Mendelson, Vice President of the Australian Association of Smoking Cessation Professionals, tells Chris Adams that these measures will make no difference unless the extra money is reinvested into programs to help smokers quit.
