Man and child, Story Bridge deaths

Police are treating the deaths of a man and toddler who fell from Brisbane's Story Bridge this morning as a murder suicide.

Police said the man — thought to be the child's father — rode his bike on to the bridge and threw the child over the railing.

He then leapt to his death.

What is the real issue? Barriers or Mental Health Senior Lecturer from School of Social Policy Studies at Flinders University Dr Keith Miller speaks with Greg Cary about the tragedy on the Story Bridge yesterday.

The bicycle was found on the footpath on the outbound side of the bridge.

A witness contacted police about 3am.

Police said the child was not the subject of any custody battle and the man and child's next of kin had been notified.

An outbound lane of the Story Bridge was closed before 8am, causing peak hour traffic disruption.

Police are expected to view footage from the 14 cameras on the bridge and another eight "pan and zoom" cameras aimed at the structure.

Frustrated residents have in the past called for screens to be erected to stop people falling off the bridge.
