Island grandmother met violent end: police

An 85-year-old grandmother, the first person ever to have been murdered on Brisbane's Macleay Island, was viciously attacked, police say.

The body of Liselotte Watson was discovered in her home on Tuesday afternoon after concerned relatives who had not heard from her asked police to check on her welfare.

Detective Superintendent Geoff Sheldon says forensic examinations will continue in the home for a number of days.

Supt Sheldon said a post mortem has confirmed that Mrs Watson met a "violent and unnatural" death.

"Her injuries are consistent with suffering quite a high level of violence," he told reporters.

Supt Sheldon would not speculate on how many people might have been involved.

"We know it's been a vicious attack in the sanctity of her own home and we need the public to come forward and help us as much as they can."

Police are trying to confirm reports Mrs Watson distrusted banks and was known to have kept thousands of dollars in cash in her home.

He appealed to anyone who could confirm the reports, or shed light on her habits, routines or visitors, to contact police.

"That might be just the one piece that we're missing in this puzzle ... this is a small community and people do talk."
