AWU scandals bizarre twist

Date

The AWU slush fund affair has taken a bizarre twist, with Prime Minister Julia Gillard's former partner describing how some of the money siphoned from the union was buried in a backyard.

Bruce Wilson told the media last night self-confessed bagman and corrupt union official Ralph Blewitt showed him one of the packages with the money, that had been destroyed by moisture.

Mr Wilson says as far as he knows Ms Gillard, then a lawyer, did not benefit from any of the actions and merely helped with some of the paperwork to establish an entity to accumulate funds for various activities.

Mr Wilson's TV interview came after a day of acrimonious attacks and counter attacks in parliament over the PM's actions in the early 90s, with Opposition deputy leader Julia Bishop late in the day backtracking on a claim that Ms Gillard helped hide the creation of the entity
