Mercedes New X Class Ute

David Berthon

Mercedes Benz can’t seem to put a foot wrong this year – sales up 7.9 per cent while its German luxury competitors BMW and Audi are down 18.5 and 12 per cent respectively.
Mercedes this week showed the production version of its much anticipated X-Class utility before it goes on sale early next year. It’s no secret that Australian’s have fallen in love with highly-equipped dual cab utes – no longer purely a working set of wheels but a highly equipped dual carriage – a Tradie vehicle through the week and a family recreational vehicle on weekends. So the arrival of the Mercedes-Benz premium skewed X-Class ute, in three grades Pure, mid-spec Progressive and a top end Power model, is eagerly awaited by fans of the three-pointed star. And with a choice of three turbo-diesel engines – two four-cylinder and flagship V6. And with a choice of rear drive, engageable or permanent all-wheel drive and either six speed manual or seven speed automatic. Based on the Nissan Navara the Mercedes X-Class ute will be built in a Nissan plant in Barcelona, Spain. There’s no indication of price at this stage but Mercedes-Benz Australia concede that while they are a premium brand the X-Class has to be competitive. However, already high end Ford Ranger, VW Amarok, Toyota Hilux and Nissan Navara models are playing in the $50 – $60,000 price bracket and most have all the safety and active driving elements of premium level sedans.
