My first paid job in radio was nights on 4KZ Innisfail. Where you wrote the commercials, read the commercials, and produced the commercials, the only thing you didn't do was sell the commercials 'cos that was left to people who made real money. Otherwise you worked Six days a week playing vinyl in the late 70's and putting out the trash on Thursday nights above a fish and chip shop in the world's second wettest place. It rained for the three months I served out my traineeship, you needed an umbrella gum boots and a sense of humour.
Hearing a commercial I voiced on the John Laws show for the first time, I still get a buzz out of that and my first talk-back show on 4BC what a rush on October 6 just days after my birthday.
Reading the sports news on 4BC I had a problem with the words fullback and Brisbane Bronco
Karmichael Hunt's surname - the stuff of legend oops! And a certain Brisbane male TV presenter turned flasher who in his early radio days tried to put me off reading a bulletin in the 1980's by showing me his tackle.
I would have loved to have met, wined and dined Marilyn Monroe and of course interviewed the lady she was so much more than the public image that Hollywood pumped out - intelligent and beautiful and her fame lives on.
