Tips to help in the middle of a Brisbane heatwave

Have necessaries supplies, that are useful for when power goes out, these are useful for all situations. Emergency Supply Kit – with items including a flashlight, battery-powered AM/FM radio, first-aid kit, bottled water and extra batteries – in an easily accessible place.

Close blinds, shades and draperies facing the sun to keep out the sun’s heat and help fans and air conditioners cool more efficiently.

Turn off power sources. TVs, computers and other electronic devices draw power when they are in standby mode or turned off but still plugged in.

Do your best to stay out of the sun and avoid strenuous activity during the sun's peak hours.

Check on elderly neighbours and relatives to ensure they are comfortable and coping.

Drink plenty of water and avoid beverages such as alcohol or caffeine.

Run your wrists under a cold tap for five seconds each every couple of hours. This, helps cool the blood.

Rest in the coolest place in your home.

If you don’t have an air conditioner, visit a venue that is climate controlled – such as a shopping centre or public library.

Keep your pets in a cool place, in the shade with plenty of fresh water.

Wear appropriate clothing (preferably light fabrics and colours).

Avoid being in the sun – if so, wear a hat, apply plenty of sunscreen and use sunglasses.
