We will never forget the Hillsborough 96

justice

I can’t let this week go by without writing about the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.

20 years ago Liverpool was up against Nottingham Forrest in an FA Cup semi final. What happened just after kickoff changed the face of sport forever.

For the full history of what occurred that day have a look at the official Hillsborough page on the Liverpool Website

The 96 fans that were crushed to death should never be forgotten. What happened that day was a tragedy, people going off to see a game of football and they never returned home. The hairs on the back of my neck stand up and I get a shiver down my spine whenever I talk about the victims of Hillsborough. The Liverpool Football Club should be commended by the way they commemorate those who lost their lives.

Some may think this blog is selfish because of my love towards Liverpool Football Club. There is some truth to that. But I have seen the Hillsborough Memorial next to the famous Shankly Gates just outside Anfield. I have seen the documentary that will air on the history channel this Thursday night on the disaster. You can’t help but be moved by this sad loss of life.

96 people died that day in the terrible crush. Now all EPL games are fully ticketed and the large fences separating the pitch and the stand have been removed. But it took the loss of 96 innocent fans for this to happen.

There have been greater tragedies and disasters throughout history, but think about, these would have been families or groups of friends so excited about going to an FA Cup Semi Final. They were heading off to cheer their team. It should have been a day of joy and not sadness.

On April 15 this year, spare a thought for the Hillsborough 96 - You Will Never Walk Alone.

Blog comments Your Say

  • Ron,
Thanks for you comment. But you are way off the mark on this one. Read up on what happened then you will know how the police totally stuffed up. Then you will know that the Forrest fans had the larger end of the ground (6000 more) which was a joke.
Watch the documentary, I don't think the mother and father who lost 2 teenage daughters in the tragedy are 'dining out' on it. I don't think the father who lost his 14 year old son is 'dining out' on it.
Pull your head in and don't be so disrespectful and ignorant.

  • Cmon. Can't anyone admit the late-arriving fans were at least partially to blame for the crush. Tragedy is, these same people, who pushed forward through the tunnel so they didn't miss kick off have probably dined out on the fact they are Hillsborough "survivors" for 20 years.
