The Roar didn’t Roar

Frank Farina commented after the Roar lost their preliminary final to Adelaide on the weekend that the better team lost! We may be able to take that argument in a normal run of the mill competition round match but not in a final.

Playing in a final is about winning. It is about doing what you have to do to win. Adelaide thought their best way to win was to sit back and get Queensland on the counter. Queensland thought their best way to win was to play nervous football and step things up (PANIC) in the last 20 minutes.

The Roar didn’t lose the match when Adelaide scored or when they had a number of near misses in the closing stages of the game. They lost the match when they were terribly flat for the first half. Craig Moore and Matt McKay tried to lift the team but in the pressure cooker situation of a final all 11 players had to show urgency for the entire 90 minutes.

Congratulations to Adelaide, they did what they had to do. It was a wonderful effort by Aurelio Vidmar to get his team to focus after his brain explosion the week before.

Let’s hope the Roar can overcome 2 years of disappointment and challenge for the A-League title in 2009/10. Well done to Frank Farina on getting the team to another preliminary final. Let’s hope next season the Roar can ATTACK their way into a Grand Final where they will more than likely meet Jason Culina and Gold Coast United.

The crowd figure last Saturday night must concern the FFA. Vidmar blame the cost of tickets and who could blame him. What I have noticed during the A-League’s history is that the clubs do a great job in running the matches during the 21 rounds of the competition. They market and sell the games to the fans and support the local media. Then the FFA steps in and takes things over. What was the result? A crowd of 8 thousand! A word of advise to the FFA – Don’t change the tickets prices for finals and let the clubs do what they have done all year.
