Pub and Club trading Hours
There has been a lot of debate on the radio station recently about violence in our pubs and clubs. I’m afraid in my opinion the proposed solutions will create more problems then they solve. I realise something has to be done to reduce the increasing incidents of violence but a lot of people talking about the subject seem to be out of touch on the issue.
Closing pubs at midnight or 2am is a move that is destined for disaster. As someone who goes out quite frequently one of the worst nights of the year to be in town is Easter Thursday or Christmas Eve when everything shuts at midnight. Everyone leaves licensed venues at exactly the same time and the streets are out of control. Taxi drivers can’t stand it. Pub and club owners don’t like it and the patrons don’t like it.
When used responsibly later closing times help people leave the city or valley at various times throughout the night. Also, can you imagine if the Caxton street precinct was forced to shut at midnight on origin night! It would be a disaster.
For those of you who disagree with me on this I urge you to go into town without a car on Easter Thursday or Christmas Eve and try to get home at midnight. Good Luck and have fun!
I can’t help but to also think that the earlier closing times are being pushed by police who want to cut down shift hours and staff numbers during these times which penalty rates apply.
Now when I go out I enjoy having a couple of XXXX Gold’s and a few Johnnie Walker and sodas. I don’t pop pills or take anything illegal. But how come when I have been to a number of bars the venue is packed but no one is at the bar? Let’s get serious with a number of the venues around town which are nothing more than havens for pill pushers. Some clubs in Brisbane are as closely related to drug taking as Seven Eleven is with Slurpees!
One issue related to some of the venues is the security. A lot of proprietors treat security of their venue very seriously and I must say that most do a great job. But there are a lot of cowboys out there willing to do anything for a quick dollar. The screening of bouncers and security in my opinion should be a high priority issue in some establishments.
I felt I needed to get this off my chest. It is how I feel about what is a very emotive issue. I just can’t understand why myself and the 99% of people who do the right thing should be penalised due to the actions of a few stupid fools.
