My great game

Ask anyone I know and they will tell you that I just love the game of rugby league. I watch just about every game, every weekend.

I go to Queensland Cup matches as well as NRL games. For me and many others like me rugby league is so much more than a game of football. It is a chance to get together with friends. Share good times and sometimes the bad times. It is a chance to ride the rollercoaster of emotions that only a game of rugby league can produce. Expect the unexpected and wow at the athleticism that the modern day footballer pocesses.

When I was a kid the game was simple. Turn up to Langlands Park or Lang Park with dad. Get a hot dog and a coke, sit on the sideline and cheer on my team. I never worried about the leagues club losing money, a star player being involved in an off field incident or controversies at the judiciary. The game was simple.

Now that I have followed the game for nearly a decade as part of the media I still love the game but for different reasons. I now know the players personally that are out on the field. I know how much winning means to (most of) them and how hard they work during the week. I still appreciate the game now just as much as I did when I was a kid.

I think a lot of people involved in the game need to take a step back and remember Why you liked the game and What the game means to you? Rugby League is still a great sport, but why do so many people involved want to continually knock the great game?

I know it has it's problems but the fabric of the game is still there. I know a number of Sydney clubs are in trouble, some are on their knees, I know we often get frustrated with a number of things that happen in our game. But I urge you to get out and support your local team. Turn up and yell and cheer and support your players, no matter the level of competition.

I hope that some of the people who are in positions of power in the game remember what made the game great? The answer to that is the players and the fans. The 2 most important elements in rugby league. In these tough financial times if we remember the fans then the game will survive and emerge stronger than ever. Some of the people running certain clubs need to put their ego's aside and listen to the fans. Because rugby league is the people's game.
