Fight for survival

Help before it’s too late!

One of Brisbane’s oldest sporting teams is currently facing a fight for survival.

The Souths Logan Magpies need all fans to jump on board to make certain the club has a future in the Queensland Cup. Make no mistake; this is a club on its knees.

This is just part of an email sent out to supporters of the club recently

This letter is one of the most important in relation to our great club’s future!

As Chairman of The Mighty Magpies I write this letter to inform you of the plight of our club. Please read this, our very existence is on the line.

In the past two years the club has enjoyed tremendous success on the field including 2 Club Championships. This has brought tremendous pride back to the club and once again made the mighty magpie jersey one to be feared. But our on-field success has been in part a contributor to the predicament we find ourselves in. In no way have we spent beyond our means, in fact as a board, everything we have done has been about ensuring the survival of our great club, but we can’t do it alone, we need all those associated with the club...past players and supporters to once again rise to one of the greatest challenges this club has faced in its 103 year history.

Our history is what makes us who we are. It’s what has shaped our lives. What value do you put on something that has affected so many lives, formed so many lifelong bonds and continues to provide a pathway for our kids to connect with something their mums and dads held so dear to their hearts? It’s what has made us who we are!

The club has embarked on a drive to gain members and supporters in a bid to keep the club afloat.

Now I am not a Souths supporter. But I am a rugby league supporter. Plus I know how hard the people of Souths have worked over the years to keep this great club going.

My main point is don’t be like the Souths Sydney supporters and whinge after the club has folded. I urge all Souths Magpies supporters to do something now!  One question to those passive Souths Fans - When Was the Last time you went to a game at Davies Park? For some of you I bet it was when Meninga was playing and Bennett was coaching.

Many of the local clubs are working hard to secure their futures. I compliment what Wynnum has been doing with their membership drive. Easts are working hard on attracting families to their games at Langlands.

Now people might be saying “what about some of the decisions made by the club over the years?” Frankly, I don’t care. I’m only worried about now and making sure this club survives.

Do something now to help your great club before it is too late.

By the way, before you say anything, even though I’m a Tigers supporter. I’ll be doing my bit.

  • Hi Peter, Good piece and like you I didn't start out a Souths supporter, but I am now; as my kids all played junior footy at the Magpies and my best mate was the president back then. It was then I saw the passion the old stalwarts have for one of the foundation clubs. This club will survive. It has to. KB
