What the World Needs Now
I remember driving along the Prince's Highway with mum, dad and my sister when the news came over the radio that Prime Minister Harold Holt was missing. I was 5 years old and just about to start school – the memory of that day is still crystal clear – dad’s FJ Holden, the red leather seats, my sister and me bouncing around in the back seat (there were no seatbelts then!).
I must have been mum and dad’s reaction that has burned that memory into my brain. There is something about those moments when someone significant dies that just binds us all together. We all seem to remember where we were.
And so it will be with today, Friday, 26 June 2009 with the death of the late Michael Jackson (1959 – 2009).
His death today reminded me of so many of those “remember where you were when” moments. Diana, Steve Irwin, Bobby Kennedy, John Lennon.
I spent a few days with Burt Bacharach in 2007. He wrote a beautiful song; “What the World Needs Now” (is love, sweet love). Burt performed that song with The Queensland Orchestra when he was in Brisbane – I’ll never forget being there.
A DJ in Detroit, Tom Clay, took Burt’s song and some of the speeches of John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy and Dr Martin Luther King Jnr. Tom’s work really sends me back to my childhood, I can clearly remember listening to this song when it came on – mum stopped the vacuuming and turned up the new stereogram (her pride and joy). I can remember mum having a quiet weep when we listened to the accounts of the Apollo 13 crew lost in space over the radio in that room. Tom Clay’s song had the same effect just a year or so later.
If you lived through the 60s, the assassinations of the Kennedy brothers and the Vietnam War – this song will probably trigger some strong memories.
You might want to shut the door when you watch it.

Smithy. I know why Karmichael Hunt is going to AFL. It's the game where you get a point for missing!!

Hi Smithy, Listen to you a bit but i am afraid you are nearly a lone voice. I am about your age have heard it all before. You do your bit but i am afraid it is no where near enough. What we need is someone to vote for not aligned with with the two major parties. We had a chance but see what they did to Pauline, when will some one else stand up. I am very worried the world i am leaving for my children.

Smithy, thanks for the memories. Unfortunately we are slow to learn from history so we will always have reason to revisit this music clip over and over and overâ¦â¦
I have had a disturbing week, it started with the 4 corners story about child witches in Nigeria that showed the worst child abuse that I have ever seen. Young children thrown in fires, having scalding water poured them, limbs broken with bones protruding, young girls having steel nails driven into their heads, some children butchered and others buried alive.
In Iran we witnessed the murder of Neda and the spilling of the first blood that history shows is the price that freedom and democracy exacts from us. We can not know when Iran will become a free nation, but the blood assures the journey has begun.
The death of Michael Jackson came as a shock, when he was in trouble he always had the support of his fans, though some friends abandoned him. His music will live onâ¦â¦.Albert Friday 26 June, 2009 - 1:34 PM -
