The Grog

Posted by: Michael Smith | 2 February, 2009 - 1:36 PM

The National Health and Medical Research Council has produced new guidelines on the grog.

They say two a day is OK. Never, ever more than 4 drinks in the one day.

One standard drink is a 10 ounce beer. So you could only have one schooner a day to make sure you didn’t go over the two standard drinks a day limit.

You could never have 3 schooners or stubbies in one day. 3 schooners and you’re over the limit of 4 standard drinks a day.

These guidelines come from the Federal Government’s National Health and Medical Research Council.

Stop at 4 drinks. Never, they say, more than 4.

They say more than 2 a day seriously heightens the risk of death from grog related disease or injury. And you should stop at 4 every time.

You probably saw this over the weekend. The guidelines include recommendations for no grog, ever, for people under 18. No sip of dad’s beer, nothing.

This document was due to be released lat year – almost a year ago. It will be officially launched on 26 February this year.

What do you reckon? How much would you drink at a party? These guidelines say no more than 4 drinks ever.

I know a lot of blokes who’d cut that out before the entrée at lunch.

Never more than 4. Is that realistic?

Blog comments Your Say

  • 'stralyas dumbest radio listener here Smithy. Just finished blogging Readfern about the 'mere' botanist and what a relief it is Mr Readfern must conclude the Garnout report is dribble as Garnout is a 'mere' economist.

  • Love your work Smithy but as an alcy who has now been sober for nearly 4 years I find your light hearted approach to this serious subject disconcerting. Not being able to put the grog down is a problem and we hear every day the consequences of this problem. Please don't trivialise the limits.

  • Yes, why not
They say if you can't control how much you drink , ie stop even after one drink , then you're an alcoholic.
That would make pretty much every white male in Australia an Alcoholic.
