New Taxes
Ken Henry runs the Treasury.
Wayne Swan and the Prime Minister have asked him to review Australia’s tax system. Some of the proposals Mr Henry’s review has come up with include
- Allowing states to levy their own income taxes – a surcharge to the federal tax
- Imposing capital gains tax on family homes
- Raising the pension age
- Raising the access age for superannuation payouts
It’s no wonder that we need a review of the tax system. We’re having trouble paying for the huge increases in government spending.
It seems to me that every day dawns with a government somewhere finding new ways to spend more money. And we’re breeding generations of people whose first response to any development in their life is to look to the government for a handout.
All of this has to be paid for. So Mr Rudd and Mr Swan are reviewing the tax system to find new ways to raise the money.
- Baby bonus.
- Family tax bonus.
- First home buyer bonus
- Stimulus cheques.
- Pink batt payments.
- Ms G performing arts centres in every school.
- Misery industry payouts.
The list of government payouts is frightening.
I think Mr Rudd and Mr Swan have attacked the problems of financing government from the wrong end.
They’re looking at new ways of taxing us – new ways to raise revenue.
I think the more urgent need is to review government spending. It’s the out of control spending that leads to more taxes.
This is a big task – we’ve changed our culture from one of self-sufficiency to one of dependency. It’s the culture of the country that needs to be turned around. And we won’t fix it by finding new ways to take money from the productive bits of the economy.

Smithy,
Easy solution mate, wipeout all state and federal taxes.
Indroduce 20% flat tax on all income, allowances of wage and salary and business income over $20,000 CPI to allow for bracket creep, and a 15% GST on everything including food.
Elimination of fuel excise stamp duties etc.
Simple no problem understanding simple tax.
All persons retire on a pension or over retirement age are totally GST and tax excempt and have a federal government smart card that automaticly rebates taxes at point of sale, must have a photo ID and computer chip to eliminate fraud.
To simple for current bunch of Pollies thou.
