Cable Modem

Senator Stephen Conroy, Minister for Broadband, explains to Michael Smith what the new $43Bn broadband rollout will provide for consumers. Michael Smith finds out if it's all worth it, or if it won't actually make a difference to the majority of the public. Have your say.

  • Doctors monitoring people in their own homes?

Is this the Federal plan for a National Medicare Network?
Are Labour seriously going to roll out a Primary Care plan for regional Australia based on a Doctor sitting in a room monitoring patients that they cant see in a hospital?
Oh Well by the time its finished, they could get Dr Patel to run it.

  • Let me see,,, am I cynical? or just short on faith for LaboUr, we are going to get a high speed broadband network, with a filter to slow it down, for all the school children who still haven't got their PROMISED COMPUTER on borrowed money, 42kev at best estimates, wich WILL blow out by at least 20% with LaboUrs form, and hopefully have it built in my lifetime, and it's going to be installed summarily in every home to be charged out at astronomical rates, and then probably be sold off like everything else, only to cost more in the long run, just so we can download youtube, music and games faster. PURE GENIUS !!!!!!! NOT

  • Gordon E Moore (Intels founder) stated that the speed of a computer will double approx every 2 years, as will memory and storage capacity.
This proven formula is now known as Moores Law.
What seems fast today, will be considered outdated and slow tomorrow.
40 Billion dollars is a lot of money for some tecnology that could be outdated before it is even installed.
Soon there will be optical computers that will only be slowed down by such a network.

  • "Micro-trenching fibre method could save NBN $10 billion"

I wish the government spent more time researching more cost saving techniques that in the long run save tax payers money. 10 billion is a big saving and a 25% discount.

  • hey smithey! listening to you in japan via the web...actually it's fibre-optics! japan's had this type of net for years. actually the difference is way noticable. however, the biggest problem i see with the internet in australia is the download limits. that's just insane. to fully take advantage of fibre-optic internet you need this. i can watch online tv in full screen hd quality all day. i don't need to get cable tv. it is the future, but by the time the nbn gets organised most of the world will be onto much faster speeds. they've already got speeds of up to 1gb here.. that's just a tad faster than the 100mg the nbn is talking about. love the show and you definitely have to run for pm or at least premier at the next election.
