If I lived in Afghanistan

Posted by: Michael Smith | 12 October, 2009 - 12:59 PM

If I lived in Afghanistan and I had enough money I’d get on a boat and do my best to hit Australia’s shores.

The message is pretty clear from this country; if you can make it here you’re set.

It seems that coming from Afghanistan is enough.   If you leave that country, say you’re fleeing the war and that you’re seeking asylum here you’ll be accepted (subject to health, identity and character checks).

42 Afghan men were on the boat that was allegedly set alight by Afghan men on April 16 this year killing five of their number and seriously injuring several Australian defence force personnel.  The Northern Territory’s Assistant Commissioner Mark McAdie has said that there was insufficient evidence to charge any of the surviving Afghan men over the possible murder.

NT police have said that the Indonesian people smugglers were not responsible.

And today the surviving Afghan men have been released into the Australian community on permanent protection visas, many of them here in Brisbane.   Prior to the conclusion of the coroner’s inquest into the deaths of the 5 men.   It’s possible there is a murderer or murders among them.

We need to exercise some tough love here.   The message from Australia is clear – if you can make land on a boat you can jump the queue.

If Michael Smith lived in Afghanistan Australia would be a much better place.

  • I'm with you Carlinite. Mike Smith seems to delight in playing the race card. As you rightly point out all these people just want out. They don't care where - just away from the war & terror. I cringe when I regularly see such uncaring attitudes displayed on his blog.

  • Get real Mr Smith. These people don't have televisions or radio broadcasting. Most of them don't even know where they're going, they just want out. Very few (if any) even know there is a queue to jump! But go on mate, bash the hopeless foreigners, it's the Australian way.
