Our native flying-foxes are the only nocturnal, long distance pollinators and seed dispersers of native forests that Australia has. No bats - no trees - that simple. All native species have a purpose and we need to respect that purpose. If we lose, persecute or 'cull' a native species into extinction we do so at our own peril. Our shortsightedness and selfishness will be our undoing in the end and no amount of horses will fulfil the valuable role of the humble flying-fox in our environment.

Wow - scary stuff. Such ignorance and intolerance of the importance of a native species. I don't see your horses out pollinating the forests and spreading the seeds of biodiversity each evening. Our bats are a native species and they are meant to be here - they have a purpose and we need them in this era of climate change more than ever. Research your facts before sprouting on about subjects you know nothing about. No bats - no trees - fact. Another fact - humans cannot get Hendra from a bat. You can only get Hendra from a HORSE! True.

if you suggest that in some
cases bat colonies should be culled or moved, the greenies
scream and their Labor mates
bow and scrape to them.How
many people remember that some years ago a large colony
of bats was making life hell
for the staff and pupils at
a primary school in NSW.Did
the greenies care? Did the
Labor goverment care?The
answer to both questions was
no.Would their labor mates
here care about a similar
situation? Dont be ridiculous.peter hansen Wednesday 26 May, 2010 - 12:04 PM -
If I was a horsy person, or was in a situation where bats created a possible health problem for me or my family, I'd sit quietly and consider the benefits and advantages of fostering bats in my vicinity, their contribution to the wellbeing of mankind and weigh all that up against the possibility of their infecting just one of my horses or family members.

Bloody hell Michael I can't believe this country, horses and humans dying of the hendra virus and we all know where it comes from dirty stinking germ ridden bats abd government and councils have not got the guts to cull them. How do people feel drinking from water tanks having that washed into your drinking water. What would these idiots rather do, save the bats and let horses and humans die all for a bunch of goats that want to save them.
