Halal certification
Many of my listeners have written to me and asked about a new symbol that’s appearing on food and grocery items in Australia.

I’ve seen it on Cadbury chocolates.
The certification that a food item is Halal is provided by the Halal Certification Authority Australia. - link here
Yesterday I spoke with the Chairman of that organisation Hajj Mohamed El-Mouelhy.
Mr El-Mouelhy told me that he is the sole shareholder of the organisation Halal Certification Authority Australia. He said that the “Authority” is a proprietary limited company. He politely declined to speak about the financial details – how much money organisations pay to receive accreditation from his “Authority” and what he does with the money. He said that it’s his private business.
It’s interesting then to read further on his website that
The Australian Halal Food Directory (AHFD) is a collaboration between the State Governments of Australia and was initially funded by the National Food Industry Strategy Ltd (NFISL).
Using words like “Authority” and “collaboration between the State Governments of Australia” might lead you to think that the Halal logo represented something other than a privately owned, proprietary limited company benefitting one shareholder.
Good on Mr El-Mouelhy for his enterprise in exploiting this business opportunity. It’s important that we recognise his symbol for what it is – a private business that gets money every time you buy a product with his symbol on it and you don’t know where that money goes after that. Strange days indeed

Is there a list available of foods displaying the HALAL CERTIFICATION AUTHORITY - AUSTRALIA sign? If not, could one be started by 4BC? Perhaps a list that the public could add to? As an older Australian I'd like to say that I feel betrayed by the successive governments who have enabled Muslims to have Australian citizenship. And the suffragettes who gained the vote for women in Australia would be turning over in their graves at the sight of burkas on our streets. I'm glad I'm getting old, and won't have to see the total desecration of our Australian values and way of life that's already begun in ernest. The problem is that it is so insidious.

No surrender to this mutilation - or to the creed that desires it:-

The problem StephenP is that the person who owns the Halal Certification rights in Australia is a private citizen who owns a private company. Like all citizens he has a right to earn a living and keep his finances to himself. All other matters are really and lawfully between the individual and the Australian Taxation Office.
How would you like it if every man and his dog wanted to know how you spent your money?
All large transactions are monitored so if there was something we needed to know, we'd allready know.

I think that in the heat of the moment, a lot of people are getting off the track with this topic. The main concern (that I believe we rightly should have) is the lack of transparency as to where the money that is collected by the Halal Certification Authority goes. Whether you're a Christian, Atheist, Jew, Muslim or Calathumpian wouldn't really matter if the money is being used for "worthwhile" purposes. The person's lack of disclosure should have us concerned. If Cadbury or Kraft or The Old Cookie Cottage or whoever want to encourage Muslims to eat their products, good on them. But what is with the fee being charged to "make the food acceptable" for a Muslim to consume? We are talking about 340,000 Muslims in a country of 20 million people. Is business that bad that companies have to "pay" people to eat teir products?

If a westerner or christian asked for a pork pie in Arabia they would deported or lashed, do not buy from Australin firms that changes the formular of their product to suit moslims diet.
