Crime Mapping

Posted by: Michael Smith | 15 March, 2010 - 2:36 PM
crime

Have a look at the website for the police force in the US city of Omaha, Nebraska. Like many US cities, Omaha is very upfront in producing crime statistics – the raw facts without the spin. - http://www.opd.ci.omaha.ne.us/

Click on the crime mapping feature

It's an FBI initiative associated with Google Maps. The immediacy of the crime statistics is so impressive, it's all there.

Why does it take dedicated journalists working with new Right to Information laws to extract details of crimes here in Queensland? The Crime Mapping software is commercially available off the shelf. It wouldn’t take much to have a similar program here in Queensland.

I get the sense that our politicians are doing their best to pretend that crime is not a problem, that all is well. Don’t ask too many questions.

I’d love to know your views about the crime mapping software.

Blog comments Your Say

  • Hi, Smithy,
After reading many of the blogs about the Justice Forum, I am not surprised that we have to endure the totally inept government we have in the last (almost)20 years. I suspect that most of those who made negative remarks about the passion displayed by many of the attendees have never had to deal with the dreadful trauma of those who have experienced the effects of a rampant section of our society who fearlessly perpetrate terrible crimes against innocent people. How could any sane mind come to the twisted conclusion that the Forum was all about you? I also agree that if this bloody government would listen to what we had to say, no-one would HAVE to shout!

  • Hi Smithy
I am interested in knowing why a criminal in prison. Is given access to the following?
    1. Books to learn how to be a better criminal or beat the law,
    2. Weights to make them a stronger and faster criminal,
    3. Placed with other criminals who instruct them on improving or advancing their criminal skills, plan bigger and better criminal activities together.
May I suggest the following; Lock them up in single cells: NO luxuries at all, allow the news and news paper for outside contact.
No accesses or contact from family or friends who resupply drugs and or illegal items. NO unmonitored phone calls. None or limited exercise, a small area to walk around, with supervision. Dress them like a prisoner; no more Addidas Tracksuits, they are to wear in colour calming bright Pink or orange overalls and a pair of slip on Dunlop Volleys, for winter an Australian Woolen jumper. NO work or day release. NO conjical visits. No air-con they get a fan (It’s good enough for Children in State Schools). No special religious meals, basic meals only enough to meet daily requirements under the law. Finally Lets build a prison in the middle of no-where. Make it multi-level for different crimes, the worse the crime the less the sunlight you see. A life sentence is life, not twenty years, END of their LIFE simple terminology. If given a 7 year sentence you serve a 7 year sentence end of story. It is a punishment after all.
Sorry I may have taken up to much time but this is not rocket science making it not about rehabilitation but about not wanting to be there in the first place and then about not wanting to go back.
    Thanks Gavin
