Anna Bligh is Responsible

Anna Bligh can't avoid responsibility for putting recycled hormones, sewage, blood, vomit, oil and other crap into my family's drinking water. As of a day or so ago, Anna Bligh says the decision on recycled sewage is now in the hands of the Water Commission led by Elizabeth Nosworthy. She'll take the Water Commission's advice. God help us.

Not the Health Department. But Elizabeth Nosworthy and the Water Commission.

Anna Bligh's government is weak and vacillating. Wherever there's possible political heat for their decisions they point to an independent body - "it's their responsibility". The hapless Stephen Robertson points to The Health Quality Complaints Commission. Electricity price rises used to be held to the CPI before the Beattie/Bligh government de-regulated the industry - now the energy minister Geoff Wilson says the Queensland Competition Authority is responsible for past year increases of 11%, 5%, and 10% next year.

Anna you can't avoid this. Your government promised a referendum on recycled sewage - then you back flipped. Your government said Armageddon solution only - then you back flipped. Your government said recycling for industry first - then you back flipped.

As we can see from the skies, rain-water is now available in abundance. It costs us $100 per megalitre for normal dam water, $500 for recycled water and $650 for de-salinated water. Why the rush to spend more money than we need to?

The National Health and Medical Research Council water quality advisory commission chairman Don Bursill who drew up the national water safety guidelines says this today "It is just common sense that if other more conventional sources are there and available, then you wouldn't want to go ahead with it (recycled sewage). Nobody seems to be recognising the fact that it is human error that is the source of most concern when it comes to problems with the safety of drinking water systems."

Just imagine this. One fine day the big boys from Leighton Contractors front up to the Brisbane City Council with the PowerPoint presentation and the glossy brochures. They're trying to flog the Council a management system for the Inner City Bypass. What are the chances the sales-pitch goes like this?

"This technology is rock-solid. Oh, sorry, just one little thing. One day a telemetric sensor will fail during a mega-storm and the ICB will be flooded with 11 mega litres of water, a couple of taxis and cars will be stranded - actually it's pretty lucky no-one will be killed. But please buy the system anyway."

Of course they didn't. No one expected the system to fail. But systems can and do fail. And politicians have to take responsibility for the decisions to install them.

And here's something about next year's state election - as far as I know Elizabeth Nosworthy won't be standing.

  • Someone who worked in recycled waste research overseas tells the following story. Everything looked good, the sewerage had been pooled ready to go through the process. When it came out the other end it was fully of deadly bacteria - what happened? Some one forgot to press a button to activate a certain section of the process. It is that easy to posion people; and we will not know the water is tainted until AFTER it has entered or drinking water - it takes 24 hours to confirm.

  • You beauty Smithy ... EXACTLY the way I feel ... who is running this State? Anna or the QWC ? Where is the referendum ? I don't wish to take part in Anna's crazy science experiment to show the world how far technology has come in preventing sickness and disease? Who will be accountable to the people of SEQ when the technology fails - YES SHIT HAPPENS - but it doesn't mean we want to drink it when it all goes horribly wrong.

  • What about the removal of hormones and the waste from those on Chemo-therapy when recycling water?
I don't know if there's a problem but the question was raised in a discussion we were having amongst friends. The question was raised by a medical professional. Like to know the answer.

  • Michael, I would have to agree with your comments and; are we as Queensland voters seeing a tired government? The Queensland Premier needs to be more accountable as boss of her government and not leave it to public servants/heads to provide public statements. We know that there are major issues which need a government to provide a balance response. The sooner Queensland voters have their say; then perhaps the pressure will come off us. Is the Queensland Premier really interested in another term in office? I note a report originating from the US where a nuclear war can't be ruled out and thinking about that item along with the Premier's possible back-flip re recycled water being pumped into our dams, the chances of an system failure can't be ruled out. Can radiation be broken down in this filtering process?

  • When will us Queenslanders learn that our Labor gov't needs to be kicked out of office! They could steal our children, our homes, our freedoms and still be democratically re-elected! I'm starting to feel ashamed to be a Queenslander.
