A few facts on illegal boat people

Posted by: Michael Smith | 25 September, 2009 - 1:39 PM
boat

I have a lot of questions for the Immigration Minister Chris Evans.

We learn today about secret plans to use Defence bases to house an expected surge in unlawful boat arrivals.   Why aren’t we stopping the boats by changing our policies?

The Rudd Government has formed a task force to find places to house an expected influx of boat arrivals.   But it won’t change the policy that’s encouraging the people smugglers.

Christmas Island is expected to fill up in coming months.

Labor’s so-called border protection policies are a magnet for boat people.

More than 30 boats have arrived since the Rudd Government’s new immigration laws were introduced just over one year ago.

30 boats so far since the new law just one year ago.

There were 25 for the 7 years before that.

Here are the numbers.

There were 86 boat arrivals in 1999, 51 in 2000, and another 43 in 2001.

The Howard Government changed the law and boats slowed to a trickle.

2002 – 1 boat – 1 person
2003 – 1 boat – 53 people
2004 – 1 boat – 15 people
2005 – 4 boats – 11 people
2006 – 6 boats – 60 people
2007 – 5 boats – 148 people
2008 – 7 boats – 161 people

It’s crystal clear that it’s back on.   I don’t know why the Rudd Government won’t just admit they were wrong and change the laws again.   What we had was working.   What we’ve got now is leading to the hideous people smugglers putting to sea in dangerous ships.

Mr Rudd said before the last election that he would be tough on border control.   He told Paul Kelly and Dennis Shanahan of The Australian newspaper that a Rudd Labor Government would “turn the boats back”.   It seems he’s changed his mind.

We’re given the spin that it’s not a result of the change in the government’s policy, rather the surge is the result of conflicts in Afghanistan and elsewhere.   Well that’s even more reason to change the policy and stop the queue-jumpers and people-smugglers.

It’s time we started to tell it like it is.

a bribe from the people smugglers. ALL OF THEM !
    How many Indonesian Officials involved,
INNUMERABLE !>How can we expect to have anyone
running the country now, to change things? A
p/minister paid more than Obama, an irish goblin
& his board running QANTAS, & many more CEO's
snuffling the top end profits for themselves.
We can't stop the refugees short of giving grief
to Indonesia. More mosques, muslims & their kids
at Centrelink & their husbands praying to their

  • It's not up to the politicians, nor is it up to the bleeding heart do gooder's who are the vocal monority! It's up to the population of Australia as a whole! This very important issue needs to be put to the poll's for all Australians to vote on! After all we send our toops off to war to fight under the banner of democracy! So let's put this important issue to the people who live/work/pay taxes/have fought for/ & love this country & the way it is! Australia has been built on immgration since the 1st fleet & a mix of people from around the world have added to this countries success! I'am from a family of mixed immagrant heritage & convict heritage, & you only need to speak with immagrants who where invited to come here/or came here the legal way how they feel about people forcing them selves on the Australian population & demanding that we take them on! They come here with no pass port/who knows what illnesses they bring/& what damage to the Australian invorment their boats carry with them! Put it to the people who this will affect the most! The Australian people! It's our choice how people come to this country! Not politicians who change to chase votes when it suits them! Nor is it up to the bleeding heart vocal monorities! Put it to a "VOTE"!!!!

  • If John Howard was clearly able to stop the illegal boats coming in, why can't the Rudd/Gillard lot ? After all, it is on the record that Rudd's promise was that he woukd stop the boats !!
Until we have housed and fixed the problems of all our homeless folk, we shouldn't even consider allowing illegals in, even if they are called "asylum seekers". They can find "asylum" in some other country, where their religion and language are the norm.

  • The Floodgates are open.
The ALP and The Greens policies will open the door to Illegal Immigrants (Asylum Seekers).
The illegal boats will increase every week and the cost of this OPEN DOOR policy will cost us not just our taxes but also our health. We have already seen TB outbreak in detention centers. Its time to stop Illegal Immigrants altogether.
