What we're talking about

Performers sync or swim

There has been a lot of talk in recent days about Britney Spears being caught out lip-syncing her way through her Australian tour.

But really does anyone care?

Call me an old stick in the mud if you will, but surely you must agree that the overwhelming majority of today’s pop music is about as fake as Britney’s concerts.

I have often said that the music industry has been going downhill for the past two decades and you need only look at the current hits to see the proof.

There is very little variety in today’s music, it all sounds the same and without the special recording and production effects added to most of the “stars” voices they would sound well, probably like you and me.

You see I long for the good old days.

People often say the 1980’s produced some pretty ordinary music but at least it was aimed at a wide cross section of the community.

For example let’s look back at the charts 25 years ago...

The charts in 1984 had hits like Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson’s “Say, Say, Say”, Tina Turner and “What’s love got to do with it” and Phil Collins “Against all odds”.

The movies provided us with Kenny Loggin’s “Footloose” and Ray Parker Jnrs. “Ghostbusters”.

We had real diversity in the music and people from 10 to 100 could enjoy all, or at least most of it (I don’t think anyone really ever enjoyed Lionel Ritchie’s “Hello”.

Today I feel like the record companies generally have no interest whatsoever in people aged over 18 and I for one think that is a real shame.

It’s a shame because pop music used to be something that brought families together.

Often parents liked the new Beatles, Michael Jackson, early Madonna or Rolling Stones songs as much as the kids.

Thank goodness most 14 year olds listen in with headphones now–a-days, who says teenagers can’t be considerate!
