Organ Donation
Australia has one of the lowest rates of organ donation amongst developed countries. There could be an opportunity for people to pay for their funeral costs with funds raised through donation. Dr Gavin Carney, nephrologist at the Canberra Hospital, speaks to Greg Cary about the situation.

Who are you trying to kid Selfish? Have you personally had anything to do with the Organ Donation process? I doubt it. My daughter at the age of 22 underwent a liver transplant. She is just an ordinary person, not rich or famous or with any political affiliations. This organ was not what was called optimum and she had to undergo another transplant about 18 months later which fingers crossed has been successful. Also the decision who gets the donated organ is done by a panel of medical staff NOT politicians.
Organ donation is low in this country because of apathy NOT political corruption. Something else you have wrong is that your consent to being a donor is done through Medicare not your driver's licence, and has been this way for several years. What is kakistocracy? I couldn't find it in the dictionary.Gill Friday 27 August, 2010 - 9:49 AM -
I am convinced there is a strong link between political corruption and low organ donation. When you cannot trust government when you are well, how can you trust them when you are ill and vulnerable that they will not expedite you for the benefit of a wealthy, VIP or government mate? If I had any faith in government, my driverâ??s licence would say YES to organ donation. However, as I believe we are in fact living in a kakistocracy, where the rule of law means nothing, I have ticked NO to organ donation. Now call me selfish.
