Sugar stoush
The battle of the sugar, best selling author David Gillespie and associate Professor David Calquhoun, from the Cardiologist and Heart Foundation join the Greg Cary Morning show in this heated debate about the benefits or the non-benefits of sugar. Listen and comment now.
http://www.raisin-hell.com/2010/08/why-is-heart-foundation-in-denial-over.html is about the QIMR study last month which showed people had a lower risk of heart disease if they drank full fat milk instead of low fat milk.
http://www.raisin-hell.com/2010/06/heart-foundation-tick-or-coles-tick.html compares the products with the heart foundation tick with those with the Coles tick ... guess which one comes up better ...
http://www.raisin-hell.com/2010/04/study-sugar-short-cut-to-heart-disease.html talks about the major study out of the US this April which concluded sugar and not fat was the primary indicator of heart disease.
http://www.raisin-hell.com/2010/02/does-saturated-fat-really-cause-heart.html covers the study (347,000 people) I couldn't remember the name of on air which concluded "there is no significant evidence that dietary saturated fat is associated with increased risk of [heart disease]"

Associate Professor David Calquhoun did a great disservice to his profession, the Heart Foundation and the health of all Australians. How? By not answering questions, interrupting the other speakers and changing the subject. His knowledge on the subject of the relationship between sugar and CVD seems to be totally lacking. I can't make up my mind as to whether he is highly manipulative or just plain stupid.

I've just listened to the podcast of the Sugar/Heart Foundation 'debate' and I have to say I'm very disappointed in the view of the cardiologist. Heaven help us if they all think like that he needs to read current research!

Kathy, these studies are peer reviewed - published journals. I have searched them myself from a medical database

30 years of experience! Great! Unfortunately people like Kathy (a majority)will believe a cardiologist because of the experience. Well my 25 years of adulthood has given me the experience with my own eyes that this world is getting fatter and unhealthier. Yes we can say this that and the other factor BUT take one ingredient out of the equation - fructose and I believe we will have a healthier population. We've been following the"Fat Free" and saturated fat in our diets for teh last 30 years...why is society getting unhealthier??? Think outside teh square people
