Why do we have an even number of MPâ??s to have created this possible HUNG PARLIAMENT situation?
My question about this situation is the mechanical aspect.
I was of the belief that the Australian Electoral Commission was to keep the number of electorates across Australia at an un-even number, so as not to allow this to happen. That we have a situation where neither of the main stream political parties have a majority is one thing, but to end up with a situation where both ideologies could have a even number between them is ridiculous, if not downright incompetence on the part of this government instrumentality.
We are all aware that the Labor Party and The Greens are in a coalition, if not a formal one, it is nevertheless an ideological and mechanical one (through the preference allocation in the Senate and the preferential direction in the Legislative Assembly). The Greens are on the far left of centre while the Labor Party has moved to just left of centre, but are still far from centre. Remember that the now leader of the Labor Party is Ms Julia Gillard whose history is that of a far-left political activist, being on the executive of the Socialist Forum which later amalgamated with the Fabian Socialists.

Not all independents are necessarily conservative leaning. It is entirely possible and probable that a person who was a member of The Nationals could have become an independent on ideological reasons and therefore be more inclined to lean towards the Socialist.
