Smacking

4BC Afternoons: Should smacking children be made illegal? Moyd and Loretta spoke with Dr Gervase Chaney from Perth, who is campaigning for it to be banned, as other countries also consider adopting much tougher laws on the subject.

  • I worry when we are only given part of the information, Dr Chaney states that Europe has been successful in parenting by legislating against smacking a child , what he does not state is that in 2003, 84% of the child abuse cases in Europe were found to be made up of false accusations, this then meant that those parents had to contend with investigations that eventually caused long term harm to the family unit.
It is also interesting that since 1992 when Germany and Sweden banned smacking there has been an increase in Youth Violence and crime with Sweden having a 58% rise in reported rapes in the ten years from 1999 to 2009, now all of this could very well be attributed to reasons other than the fact that smacking children is banned, but if a child is not disciplined correctly and taught right from wrong from a young age then these are usually the outcomes.
All children are different and react to different forms of discipline and I doubt any one Dr would have experienced them all

  • This will absolutely trivialise child abuse.
Child abuse will become synomonous with smacking.
We will hear of cases of child abuse and write it off as another case of a child getting upset over a smack.

  • How many young kids must suffer injury or worse because of lack of parental control. I sometimes wonder if i would be still alive if not for punishment dealt out to me by parents and teachers for disobedience in my junior years.

  • This subject happens to be one of the little bents that these world wide socialists are pushing. Further this subject is beyond the fact that this person is a paediatrician is irrelevant and his opinion on the matter carries no further clout then any other person who has children. JOC grow up.
