Price wars illegal?
4BC Mornings: ACCC is talking to Greg about the mis use of market power , specifically in relation to farmers and grocery suppliers. This follows on from our story last Tuesday regarding Coles and woollies price war on vegetables.

And I have simply said that the farmers are getting screwed by Coles and woolies like all Australian manufacturers because of cheap imports because they are a food Cartel and predatory marketing and buying is rife. As Richard has pointed out the Asian standards are not the same as the Australian farmer standards, but you prefer to save 10c (Notional figure only) as you do not mind human faecal vegetable soup etc.

I know, how's your math and reading lessons going Peter B?

Richard, unfortunately the economic reality is that a retailer couldn't model it's business plan around proud individuals like yourself who are prepared to pay 10% extra for locally sourced products.
So as not to upset mick, I'll limit myself to fruit and vege.
I am fairly sure, that the vast majority of our fruit and vege is grown in Australia.
The cost of importing fresh veges especially would be prohibitive and I am sure local producers could easily provide the same or better at a more competitive rate than foreigners could.
My comment at the outset was that there is nothing illegal about anyone (whether that be Coles, Woolies or me at a farmer market)offering farmers a deal for their produce and it is their option to take it or not.
Why is it that some/many (not sure) farmers are getting what they believe are bum deals? Too few buyers, too much product - supply and demand. I remember learning this concept when I was in primary school, it's not rocket science.James W Friday 17 February, 2012 - 1:12 PM -

It is obvious that this person has no understanding of predatory marketing and predatory purchasing, particularly with a cartel.
