Mining supertax

Keith De Lacy

Keith De Lacy, former Queensland treasurer and current chairman of McArthur Coal, discusses the government’s pledge to instigate a ‘super-tax’ with Greg Cary. The government has been warned that Zambia tried the same tax opportunity and the mining industry collapsed overnight. Have your say.

Blog comments Your Say

  • In my view the Rudd Government didn’t consider the consequences for Australian assets and
Australian capital flows of announcing a RSPT. Whether they didn’t care is only known by them, but
it appears to me they either grossly underestimated the violent global reaction to the RSPT, or didn’t
    even consider it.

  • No matter what side of the political devide you are on either a rusted on labor Party Voter (or even the left hand of the Labor Party the Greens) or conservative, this article just makes a lot of sense.

when will Rudd come out of hiding, take his lumps on this, and let things get back to normal.

You may not think that having the Australian DOLLAR in free fall is a problem ~ remember that we now no longer manufacture a lot, a very lot of our consumables. And if that is not bad enough the approximately $155billion debt we have is owed to overseas bankers and montly to the China government. You may think "Never mind" that our DEFICET is only $42billion last year, the year before that and will be for the next few years, add it all up. When we as a country spend more than we earn it is just like you and I doing the same thing. Living beyond our means, runniing up the Credit Card or drawing down on our mortgage, whatever, sooner or later it is accumulated debt that has to be paid. And at this point in time we are, as a country, racking up that debt at a rate of $100,000,000-00 a day.
