Ban The Pedestrians...

Hi Ian,

I've had a gutful of the attitude of pedestrians on the bikeway which runs alongside Coronation Drive and into the city.

The track was packed by just after six yesterday morning with numerous two wheeled lycra wears and a herd of slow moving pedestrians, who believe it is their right to stroll three or four abreast.

This leaves little room for cyclists like me who are often forced to take evasive action at 25 kilometres an hour to avoid those on foot who wander aimlessly in front of bike traffic.

And while they may whinge when they're hit by a bike – the reality is they have nobody but themselves to blame.

Yesterday I managed – but only just – to avoid no less than 4 head-on collisions with other cyclists, the Brisbane river, and countless pedestrians because they refuse to share the bikeway .

It's a catch 22 situation – ring your bell to let them know you're behind them and they become aggressive – don't ring the bell and they curse you as you whizz past.

I think it's time for affirmative action – BAN THE PEDESTRIANS – it is after all called the Bicentennial BIKE WAY - NOT the Bicentennial footpath.

STEPHEN, TOOWONG

  • Just wanted to say how great Alex Bernard's interview was with Andrew Lofthouse & Kathy Boarder this afternoon. They are both so funny and obviously enjoyed chatting with Alex. She is a very good interviewer and her show is really enjoyable. You should put her on with Peter Dick in a new and improved Breakfast show - they would be a killer combination (sorry but Jamie just doesn't cut it)

  • The rules are wrong! Pedestrians should walk on the right, not the left. They face the oncoming cyclists, see them early and then step to the side.
Where does this simple gem come from? The boy scouts guide to walking on country roads!
It is dangerous to walk on the left because you cannot see what is coming up behind you. Walk on the right, see clearly, step aside early, and everybody's happy.

  • I was dismayed when on my way to taking a client cycling this morning your news reader said that AAMI have produced report about cyclists.Talk about starting the day on a cheery note. It goes so far as saying that motorists have near misses and or collisions due to cyclists. Smithy did this report come out of an Anti Cyclists compaign? Why didn't the report produce a finding that most license holders who drive a vehicle are not aware of the rules around cyclists. 1. that you must allow 1m distance from the cyclist when over taking. 2.Cyclists are legally allowed to be two abreast on the road. What was the purpose on airing this report? There is no winner in this just more hatred towards cyclists. It is damaging, it gets my goat up,but sadly it still leaves out the most important aspect. Motorists need to be cycling aware. Cycling is international, if Australia removes cycling from our roads the world heads might not allow Australia to be part of the G20. Talk about carbon emissions. Oh and by the way to add weight to my comment Yes I do hold a drivers license I also drive, I also hold a cycling Australia license and ride a bike. I am insured with AAMI although a want to punch their lights out right now. I love motorists and most of the time I wave and say thankyou when they share the road with me. Its a nice experience when driver and a cylist have a smile to eachother if one or the other has given way. Don't critise let publicise about the rules of sharing.
