Neil James

The recent scandal involving sex in the Australian Defence Force has rocked the media. Neil James, Executive Director of the Australia Defence Association, tells Greg Cary he believes that handling of the media reports has been extremely poor and it is untrue that the ADF have not investigated the situation properly.

  • The Minister for Defence is more interested in head hunting in order to shift the focus from the Governments incompetence.

He should be supporting Commodore Kafer, instead of demanding he be sacked, Stephen Smith should fess up that it is society that is giving our ADF a bad name.

There is not a culture in the ADF of sexual misconduct here, but an isolated incident, what we have is cadets who have been at the Australian Defence Force Academy for 10 weeks, this behaviour can be found more prevalent outside of the ADF.

Last year these cretins were in year 12 of secondary school and have displayed not the behaviour of Officers who will one day lead men and women in war. This is a culture that our society has inflicted upon the ADF and it is up to the ADF to teach these youths right from wrong, something what their parents should have done by instilling some morals and common decency, but the ADF cannot do that when politicians interfere in the process of changing societies cretins into members of the Australian Defence Force, in this case Officers.

  • Didn't the Police advise that there was no real criminal case to answer? Only when the story hit the press did they revise their advice?

  • I spent 21 years in the Navy, and am totally embarrassed and disgusted at the handling of the sex scandal at ADFA, not to mention the invasion of privacy of the female involved.
Its about time head should roll and at last we have a Minister calling officers in charge to account.

  • The ADF does not have a cultural problem, I have grew up in the Townsville region and I know about why those rumours circulate and they are hypocritical and they do not apply to all ADF personnel, let me explain where they stem from but first let me say that I have never been affiliated with the ADF but I grew up in a defence force area and I understand the substance behind these rumours and they stem from firstly rivalries between men that are in the ADF and those that aren't because there is always a few troublemakers in all groups and when they clash those from the ADF tend to come out on top in a confrontation because of there physical abilities, secondly there are always a few guys in the ADF and outside that will use women as they are on generous remuneration and are very physically fit men and this treatment is no different to other how a minority of people from areas of employment are involved in and these reasons combined that are based on envy and on problems of treatment of women and the treatment of women should not be soley respected in the ADF it should perform to a certain standard in all of society and so I do not condemn the culture of those fighting for my way of life, I feel compelled to stand up for them and acknowledge the unjust coverage directed towards them, I study law, I have no family affiliation with the ADF and no personal affiliation but that doesn't mean I should be ignorant of there contribution and treat them with double standards, I am proud of the contribution of the ADF
