A women's right
The ripples that Julia Gillard's de facto relationship with Tim Mathieson have caused are further spreading. Should this, or should this not be an issue, is the question that Dr Karen Brooks poses with Greg Cary as they look at the reports that are for or against this public relationship.

What about the baby?

Hi Bella - since when was a simple statement of fact a tirade? I didn't say that the Church invented marriage but it subsequently managed to use it as a lucrative source of funds.

Steve, as usual a tirade unassociated from the core statement. Karen Brooks said that marriage was invented by the church to make money... wrong... Marriage was already invented / introduced long before the church, as such came into being. The Church as referred to by Karen Brooks is the Christian Church which did not exist till the conference of nicia in the year 305 A.D.

Marriage goes back before reliable recorded history.
eg: The north American Indians believe that a married woman works hareder and loses sexual freedom
The unmarried women cause strife in the tribe so are given no choice but to get married as this reduces the competition amongst the males.
In Hamurabi's times (the cradle of civilisation) Man paid the bride a price for exclusive sexual access.Marriage seems to have a history of being demeaning to women but they seem to embrace it as an institution anyway

Bella ask your Dad about the history of wedding "banns " in 14 Century England - they were a supplement to church income.
Historically, the Christian church (and all other religions}have introduced mechanisms to raise funds - a good example is the selling of indulgences by Catholic church.steve Tuesday 29 June, 2010 - 4:36 PM -
Marriage was not "introduced to put money in the pockets of the church", atheists look for anything to denigrate the Church. Yes, marriage was developed to protect blood lines, introduced actually by the males of B.C. society. My father is a theologian and he has the research material on the subject. Do your research properly Dr Karen Brooks
